Fitzroy Crossing - Derby

Fitzroy Crossing was a quick one night stop so when we arrived we hurried ourselves along so we could take a tour on the Geikie Gorge.  It was another very different gorge but probably the one with the most interesting wall features.  The force of the water has created such an amazing dapple texture and hollows it really is a sight to see.  In Geikie we say many freshwater crocs on the side of the river bank sunning themselves.  They are so different to the salt water crocodile it is hard to understand why I ever thought they were similar.  The Fairy Martin bird nests are pretty amazing.  They are made of mud and look like a bottle.  They build the nest on the underside of the caves so snakes and lizards can not get them.  The wall colour is also very unique.  The lower section is white like the sandstone should be but as it goes higher the walls get dark and stain to an almost black brown appearance.  You can see the flood lines on the walls due to this cleansing on the walls.

Our next stop was at Derby for another day stop over so we made the most of the afternoon that we arrived.  We firstly visited the Boab Prison Tree where they would camp over night with their aboriginal prisoners who were being sent to Broome for the pearling trade.  We also saw a cattle trough that was fed by the Myall bore and would have 500 head of bullock drinking at one time.  We then drove a little way to visit Frosty's Pool.  A purpose build pool for the army boys in the war.  Our last stop off for the afternoon was at the Old Derby Jail. A very eerie place it was.  The kids had a lot of fun being locked up.  Well two of them.  The other would not get out of the car again.

Hands up, you're under arrest!

In the early evening we headed to the Derby Pier to see the nip tide and watch the sunset.  We ate fish and chips on the pier and enjoyed a very pleasant evening chatting with other tourists. The Pier was amazing lit up and night.  I made for a very perfect night.

Met a lovely couple who have now been following us from Bungle Bungles.  Dennis and Marion have both been great for a yarn.

Are we home??????? Servo in Derby!
Off to Broome now.  Can't wait.  Will be catching up with the some new friends made while travelling.  Can't wait to hear about their experiences on the Gibb River Road.
