Streaky Bay

Ride anyone?
The first couple of days in Streaky Bay we were extremely lazy.  After the big days on the Nullarbor we decide to rest up.  The kids played for hours with the other kids around the park and it was a little wet the second day so it made more sense to just enjoy the relaxed mode we were in.  Trying to adjust our body clock was going to take awhile but when you have noisy backpackers yahooing around you until 3am it can make it a little difficult. The boys headed for the Powerhouse museum to look at the vintage engines for a short while in the afternoon while Jordan and I enjoyed our own time together.

Couldn't pick which photo I like the most so you can choose which one you like.

We caught up with Ryan my second cousin on Mum's side.  That was great.  We caught up with everything in each others lives and our kids really got along well with Ryan and Lyn's three.  Eden, Hunter and Sonny.  We had plenty of catch ups with them over the next couple of days and Ryan even acted as our tour guide of the area.

We visited many of the main attractions of the area including the Cape Bauer Loop that took in the ruggered coastline of the area.  We visited Whistling Rocks where the kids stood over the holes and had a blast.  In more ways than one.  We also looked at the blowholes which were not active but can be an awesome site in the storms.  You stood right next to them.  I would hate to be next to them when they were going off.  You would get drenched.

From there we headed back towards Streaky and then out to Yanerbie sand dunes  Wow now that was fun.  The kids spent ages running up and sliding down them.  I even had a go and stacked big time.  Sand in places where it should not be.  We then drove around the Westall Way Loop Drive.  Taking a few ruggered 4WD tracks.  I think Ryan thought our car was capable.  Luckily we made it in and out without a problem but the tyres certainly took more punishment than Nigel and I would ever give them.  We stopped at Smooth Pool to look for crabs and then headed to Highcliffs.  A very pretty coast.  One that is said to be at her best from March to May.

Our last day in Streaky we spent visiting Point Labatt Conservation Park.  This is the home of the largest mainland breeding colony of Australian Sea-lions.  We had to observe them from a viewing platform more than 50metres above them so binoculars are a must and a telescopic lens for the camera also very important.  Thank goodness we had both.  We spent ages watching them playing in the water, lying around sleeping and a young pup calling out to it mother.  He looked for ages then headed back to the water in search of her there.

Murphy's Haystacks was our last destination.  This was a unique outcrop of pink granite boulders.  They were very pretty but their name is a little strange but a story each of you that wish to travel will have to find out for yourselves.  I can't give away everything now.

I also caught up with Nanette, Ryan's mum on the last day in Streaky and had a great chin wag with her.  It was nice to catch up with family again.  The whole 5 days was full of family activities which was a nice change.

Off to Port Lincoln.  The weather is not looking promising.  Hopefully we don't get blown away.
